Turning Point is a nonprofit organization helping economically disadvantaged people in Brooklyn, New York. Our goal is to change lives by providing comfort and help to hurting people. We work with disconnected youth, families in crisis, the homeless, substance abusers, the unemployed, persons infected with and affected by HIV, adult non-readers and non-English-speaking immigrants.

Raymond Figueroa

Ray Figueroa, a one-time teenage gang member, heard about the good work being done by an agency then known as Discipleship. In 1989, he became an employee, working as assistant to the Executive Director. He created and implemented programs providing permanent housing opportunities, special needs housing for youth and people living with HIV, outreach and education programs, and the expanded services for Red Hook. He served as Deputy Executive Director, and was appointed Executive Director in March, 2002. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Brooklyn Outreach Workers and the Supportive Housing Network of New York. In 2004, Mr. Figueroa received the Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Program Award.

Bruce Carmel has a doctorate in Education from New York University. He has taught for more than twenty years in public schools, colleges and universities, libraries and community-based organizations. Just prior to coming to Turning Point, he led the Queens Library's Adult Learner Program, the largest library literacy program in the county. Dr. Carmel serves on the Steering Committees for the Mayor's Office of Adult Education's Revisioning Retreat and the Coalition for Adult Literacy. He is a recipient of the Literacy Assistance Center's 2005 Literacy Recognition Award. Dr. Carmel joined Turning Point in 2003.

Margaret Pemberton has twenty years experience working in adult and youth education. She has worked as a teacher, job developer and a program coordinator. Before coming to Turning Point, she worked for Community of Unity, Inc and HANAC, Inc., where she had great success moving public assistance recipients to independence. She has a Masters Degree in Human Services from Lincoln University.

Susan Thompson joined Turning Point Educational Center in September, 2003, as a teacher, and became the Center's Program Director in 2006. Before that, Ms. Thompson was an adult literacy teacher and supervised a parenting program at the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center. She also worked with children and parents through programs at the Brooklyn Public Library and the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service. Prior to teaching adult literacy and parenting skills, Ms. Thompson was employed in the private sector. She has a B.A. in English literature and received a Certificate in Adult Literacy from The New School.
