Raymond Figueroa

Raymond Figueroa has been with Discipleship since 1989 and has been rapidly promoted and given increased responsibilities. He began as an Assistant to the Executive Director, and has served as Facility Manager, Housing Development Coordinator, Program Director, Director of Operations, and Deputy Executive Director. He has been responsible for the development of permanent low-income housing opportunities, special needs housing (i.e., for people living with AIDS), and HIV/AIDS outreach and case management services in Red Hook. Mr. Figueroa was appointed Executive Director in March 2002. He has completed Pratt Institute’s Community and Economic Development Internship Program.

Lenore Hildebrand PHD 2.18.06

Lenore Hildebrand joined Discipleship in August 2002. She has a Doctorate in Social Welfare (her dissertation was on alcoholism and recovery) from Hunter College School of Social Work (CUNY), a Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service, and Certification in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health. She also has a second Master’s degree in English from New York University. A New York State Certified Social Worker, Dr. Hildebrand has over 15 years’ combined experience as a clinician, administrator, educator, and consultant in health care, non-profit, and higher education settings. She has a proven record in staff supervision and training, program development, evaluation, technical assistance, and grantsmanship. Dr. Hildebrand is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Human Services in the City University.

Bruce Carmel PHD2.18.06

Bruce Carmel

Bruce Carmel has a doctorate in Education from New York University. His dissertation researched the causes of adult illiteracy. He also has a Masters degree from NYU’s School of Education, and a Bachelor of General Studies from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Carmel has worked as an educator for over twenty years. He has taught in public schools, colleges and universities, libraries, and community-based organizations. He has been a teacher, a trainer, a writer, and a program manager. Before coming to Turning Point, he led the Queens Library’s Adult Learner Program, the largest library literacy program in the county. Before that he was the Curriculum Director for “TV411,” an educational television series for adults. He has created many lesson plan units for PBS’s Channel Thirteen’s Adult Education section of “Ed Online.” He also helped launch “firstfind.info,” an online information library for adults with limited literacy. In 2005, Dr. Carmel received the Literacy Assistance Center’s 2005 Literacy Recognition Award. He joined the Turning Point team in 2003
