For almost 30 years, Turning Point has built quality programs and has attained a positive reputation in both the Sunset Park and Red Hook communities and within Brooklyn’s large social service network. One client described Turning Point as an “oasis in a desert of despair.” We have strong linkages with other community organizations and institutions in order to maximize our ability to have an impact on our clients’ lives. During this time, we have diversified our programs and have worked hard to integrate those programs, enabling clients to benefit from as many components of the organization as they need or want. Turning Point currently provides direct services to 4,000 clients each year and reaches 20,000 more through outreach programs. The agency has since grown into a major social service provider and employer in Sunset Park and Red Hook with a budget of over $5 million and a staff of over 80. Below is a brief description of Turning Point’s programs and their locations:
The Exodus Program – Individual and group counseling, support groups, crisis intervention, and relapse prevention for parolees, probationers, and members of the community. Clients complete at least six months of drug-free living and are involved with 12-step programs, work, and educational training. Referrals are also made to detox, rehabilitation and/or treatment, and other supportive services for those seeking help.
HIV Outreach, Prevention, and Direct Services (Multi-Service Agency Initiative) – Outreach to those at risk and to the general public. The program reaches 20,000 people annually through street corner outreach, educational presentations to other agencies, and community-level activities (ex: health fairs, street festivals, etc.); provides supportive services to those with advanced HIV or full-blown AIDS through counseling and referrals; and offers case management assistance with housing, medical coverage, and other issues critical to the HIV/AIDS client.
Scatter-Site Housing for People with HIV/AIDS and Case Management – A supportive housing program for HIV/AIDS clients with a history of homelessness and substance abuse. This program also provides assessment, treatment plans, counseling, monitoring, support groups, activities, and referrals. Our services result in improved health, fewer hospitalizations, reduction in drug use, and a return to families and jobs.
Career Development Program – A supportive, challenging program that fosters critical thinking and practical coping skills for those individuals seeking to enter or return to the workplace. The program offers vocational assessment, life skills classes, pre-employment preparation, computer skills training, career/vocational/pre-college counseling, internships, job placement and follow-up support.
