The MSA (Multiple Service Agency) Program has two primary functions as a program. First the program provides community outreach, referral, and educational presentations to the communities of Red Hook and Sunset Park on issues relating to HIV/AIDS, general at-risk behaviors, sexually transmitted infections and communicable disesases. Secondly, the program provides crisis intervention and case management services to anyone who walks-in off the streets or who is referred through the outreach program. One of the objectives of the case management staff is to encourage those individuals who are unaware of their status to maintain appropriate safe sex practices. Through one-on-one counseling and support these objectives are met when the client is "ready".
The outreach team along with the case management and crisis staff works together to ensure that a clients needs are met. Weekly team meetings and case conferences are held within the program to re-evaluate the service that a client recieves. As a mission, the MSA program encourages the client to take control of his/her tretment plan so that no decision is made without the clients input. We believe that this empowers the client to take responsibility for his or her own actions and make treatment outcomes successful.
On a daily basis, the outreach team makes contact with maybe 500 people trying to educate them on ways to prevent at-risk behaviors and of those 500 people, if any of them needs additional services the outreach team will refer them back to the case management staff for help. Although the outreach team primarily focuses on the communities of Sunset Park and Red Hook, they have visited other communities of Brooklyn and NYC.
Outreach to those at risk and to the general public. The program reaches 15,000 people annually through street corner outreach, educational seminars to other agencies, and house-to-house literature distribution; provides supportive services to those with advanced HIV or full-blown AIDS through counseling, recreational and other group activities, and a buddy system; and offers case management assistance with housing, medical coverage, and other issues critical to the HIV/AIDS client.
